Road works update for week starting Monday 11 April

A roundup of works underway or soon to start around Orkney, for the week starting Monday 10 April:
Verge reconstruction works on the Old Finstown Road are ongoing, with full road closure between the access to Cursiter Quarry and Cruan Road, with no access to the area for the duration. A signed diversion is in place via Zions Loan for all traffic. School transport and the public bus service 7 (Birsay) will follow the signed diversion.
Scottish Water are currently working on the A960 in Toab, traffic will be controlled by traffic lights for the duration of the work.
The collapsed culvert on the Harray Road (A986) is currently covered by steel plates while replacement options are being investigated. Further information will be provided in due course once replacement works are programmed.
Streetlighting and footway resurfacing is currently underway on Scapa Crescent and are expected to continue into early June. Access to properties is being maintained. The work will be carried out using a variety of traffic management which will include road closures at times.
Slab repairs are underway in various locations in central Stromness as noted below, from the week starting 3 April - all work will be carried out under road closure conditions. The anticipated schedule is:
- Week 1, John Street from North End Road to E Flett butcher’s shop.
- Week 2, John Street from E Flett butcher’s shop to Victoria Street, Victoria Street from John Street to No 16 Victoria Street (RNLI building).
- Week 3, Victoria Street from No 16 (RNLI building) to Church Road, including the area of Ferry Road around the fountain.
- Week 4, Victoria Street from Church Road to Helliehole Road which includes Graham Place and Dundas Street.
- Week 5, Melvin Place, Alfred Street, South End and Ness Road.
Looking ahead:
Work to replace some manhole covers on the A965 in Finstown between the Old Finstown Road and 30mph signs at the eastern (Kirkwall) side of Finstown are planned to start on Monday 24 April 2023. It is hoped the work can be carried out under temporary traffic signals but this will be confirmed. Work is expected to take around a week to complete.
Resurfacing work is currently planned on the A965 in Finstown between the junction with Heddle Road and Baikies Stores, from around 2 May. It is hoped that the bulk of the work can be carried out under temporary traffic signals however there may be the need to road closures particularly on adjoining roads. Details including any impacts on public buses will be confirmed in future updates.
