Road works update for week starting Monday 10 October
Date: 6 October 2022
A reminder our Roads team are out and about carrying out emergency repairs and resurfacing work on the county's roads.
First, a reminder that work on Glaitness Road (Kirkwall) by Scottish Water is ongoing, with traffic currently being controlled by temporary traffic signals.
Emergency works will start on Monday 10 October 2000 on the Harray straits (the A986 near the property of Ben-Earn) to address water on the road between Grimeston Road and Refuge Corner. Traffic will be controlled under temporary traffic signals wile works to replace a suspected collapsed culvert take place. Drivers are asked to please heed any temporary speed signs for the safety of workers exposed to traffic. Works are expected to take around a week to complete, possibly longer. The works will mean slight delays for public bus Service 7 (Birsay-Dounby). Slow signs are in place - motorists are advised to drive carefully and be aware that water on the road may gather quickly in damp weather and even some time after downpours.
Works on the A966 between Norseman Village and Gorseness Road are underway. The works are being carried out under traffic lights – drivers are asked to heed the temporary speed limits. There will be slight delays to public bus Service 6 (Tingwall ferry).
And a reminder work is underway on Manse Road, Deerness on Thursday and Friday this week (6 and 7 October). Watermoss Road and a section of Manse Road will be closed to traffic for the duration of the work on site.
Onto our planned resurfacing programme from Monday 10 October:
The resurfacing work on Cromwell Road at the junctions with Mount Drive and Islands View Road will be carrying on until the end of the day on Thursday 13 October. Cromwell Road will be closed to all traffic, with a signed diversion route in place via St Catherines Place roundabout for light vehicles (all heavy vehicles being diverted via Junction Road and Clay Loan). There will be significant impact on public bus Service 9 (Kirkwall Town service) – the bus will not be able to serve East Road (Orkney College), Work Road, Carness, Islands View Road and Cromwell Road. Instead the bus will divert/continue down Berstane Road, then travel via Queen Street, King Street, School Place, Dundas Crescent, Clay Loan, and Junction Road to rejoin the route at Shore Street. We’ll have more details on diversions shortly.
Work is scheduled to take place on the A965 Finstown at the junction with Heddle Road from Thursday 20 October to Saturday 22 October. During the course of the work traffic will be controlled with temporary traffic signals, with Heddle Road closed at times in order to complete the work in safety. Openreach have advised that work to replace a manhole cover on Easdale Loan will start on Tuesday 18 October 2022, with the work expected to take up to three days to complete. The No 4 bus service to the Airport will not serve Easdale Loan and will follow the diversion. The Council’s planned works to resurface the junction has been postponed to allow this repair and is still to be reprogrammed – updates will follow in due course.
Work on Linksness Road, Stronsay, is currently planned to start on Monday 24 October 2022 with the work planned to take a week to complete, with the work being carried out under road closure conditions. Given that Linkness Road is a single track road closures will be kept to a minimum.
