Road works update for week starting 3 October

Date: 30 September 2022

A reminder our Roads team are out and about carrying our resurfacing work on the county's roads, including a road closure on Cromwell Road from Monday (3 October) which will have an impact on the No. 9 Kirkwall Town public bus service.

First, a reminder that work on Glaitness Road (Kirkwall) by Scottish Water is ongoing, with traffic currently being controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Onto our own resurfacing programme:

  • On Monday 3 October 2022 resurfacing work is planned on Cromwell Road at the junctions with Mount Drive and Islands View Road, with the works expected to take a week to complete. Cromwell Road will be closed to all traffic, with a signed diversion route in place via St Catherines Place roundabout for light vehicles (all heavy vehicles being diverted via Junction Road and Clay Loan). There will be significant impact on public bus Service 9 (Kirkwall Town service) – the bus will not be able to serve East Road (Orkney College), Work Road, Carness, Islands View Road and Cromwell Road. Instead the bus will divert/continue down Berstane Road, then travel via Queen Street, King Street, School Place, Dundas Crescent, Clay Loan, and Junction Road to rejoin the route at Shore Street. Contact Stagecoach for further assistance on 01856 870 555, download the Stagecoach app, and follow Stagecoach Highland on Twitter @StagecoachHLand
  • One-day survey work on the First Barrier (A961) is planned for Thursday 6 October 2022 with traffic being controlled by Stop / Go boards and a convoy vehicle to make the area as safe as possible for the survey team. As a result, it is expected that there will be lengthy delays to traffic using the A961 with this also having a knock-on effect to traffic on the B9052 (Graemeshall Road). More details available here.

  • Work will also commence on Manse Road, Deerness on Thursday 6 October 2022 with work expected to take two days to complete. In order to carry out the works in safety Watermoss Road and a section of Manse Road will be closed to traffic for the duration of the work on site.

  • Work on Liddle Road, South Ronaldsay is planned to start work on 10 October 2022 with work currently planned to take four days to complete, again this work will be carried out under road closure conditions with disruptions to affected properties minimised when possible.

  • Work is planned to start on Kirbist Road and Sandy Road, Westray on 10 October 2022 with both sites expected to take around a week to complete, the work will be carried out under road closure conditions with delays minimised where possible on Kirbist Road and a signed diversion route being in place for the work on Sandy Road.

Looking a bit further ahead:

  • Work on the B9055 Brodgar Road is scheduled to commence on Friday 14 October 2022 with work planned to take around three weeks to complete. All work on the B9055 will be carried out under road closure conditions and signed diversion routes will be in place for duration. This will impact on the No 8S Quoyloo public bus service. We’ll have more details on diversions shortly.
  • Work is scheduled to take place on the A965 Finstown at the junction with Heddle Road from Thursday 20 October 2022 to Saturday 22 October 2022. During the course of the work traffic will be controlled with temporary traffic signals, with Heddle Road closed at times in order to complete the work in safety. Further details to follow.
  • Openreach have advised that work to replace a manhole cover on Easdale Loan will start on Tuesday 18 October 2022, with the work expected to take up to three days to complete. In order for the work to be carried out safely, Easdale Loan will be closed for the duration of the work, with a diversion via Holm Road and Bignold Park Road. The No 4 bus service to the Airport will not serve Easdale Loan and will follow the diversion. The Council’s planned works to resurface the junction has been postponed to allow this repair and is still to be reprogramed – updates will follow in due course.
  • Work at the junction Lynn Road and Deerness Road has been reprogrammed with work now expected to start on 31 October 2022 instead of 3 October 2022 as originally planned. Further details to come in due course.
