Road works update for week starting 28 August

A summing up of road works underway or soon to start in the county - for week starting Monday 28 August 2023.
A965, Finstown - Resurfacing work on the A965 in Finstown (between the junction with Heddle Road and Baikie’s Stores) has restarted on Phase 3 of the works (from the Finstown Post Office to Grandon Road). Works are expected to finish mid-September.
As with the previous phases, temporary traffic lights are being used to control traffic past the site, meaning delays for all traffic in the area.
Motorists are advised that at some point during the week, works will move over onto the northern side of the road which will see the junction with the A965 and Grandon Road being closed to traffic (with only access to E Fraser Electrical being maintained). All other traffic and property access will be via a diversion route using the A966 (Evie road) and Holland Road.
Residents within the signed traffic management area and Grandon Road should present their bins as normal for collection.
Inganess Road, Kirkwall - Streetlighting and footway resurfacing works on Inganess Road are ongoing. The works are currently at the junction of Berstane Loan and Inganess Road, with traffic being controlled by temporary traffic signals, with delays for all traffic including the No 9 Kirkwall Town bus service.
A966 Evie, near Evie Telephone Exchange – OIC will be carrying out some drainage investigation during the course of the week, with the works being carried out under temporary traffic signals - some minor delays to traffic in the area.
Kirbister Road, Stromness - Openreach works on Kirbister Road, Stromness are ongoing until 19 September. In order to carry out the works safely the road will be closed.
A960, St Andrews - Scottish Water works on the A960 St Andrews from Groatsetter Road to Sebay Mill are ongoing, currently work is being carried out in under temporary traffic lights which will result in delays to traffic in the area including the No 3 Deerness bus service.
Looking ahead - please note change of dates for works on A960 (Deerness Road/Airport road from those previously advised):
- Phase 1 A960 (Deerness Road) - from Kirkwall 40mph signs to Heathery Loan. Work is expected to take place on this section 7-27 September 2023. Repair and strengthening to some edge of carriageway areas. Work will be carried out under traffic lights, with minor delays for all traffic including public bus Service 3 (Deerness) and Service 4 (Kirkwall Airport).
- Phase 2 A960 – from Airport Emergency Access to Tankerness Hall Road. Work is expected to take place on this section 27 September - 18 October 2023. Repair and strengthening works to some edge of carriageway areas. Work will be carried out under traffic lights, with minor delays for all traffic including public bus Service 3 (Deerness) and Service 4 (Kirkwall Airport).
- Phase 3 A960 – from Tankerness Hall Road to Groatsetter Road. Work is expected to take place on this section 18 October - 25 October 2023. Repair and strengthening works to some edge of carriageway areas. Work will be carried out under traffic lights, with minor delays for all traffic including public bus Service 3 (Deerness).

- A961 Burray Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
- A964 bends at Scapa Distillery and Smoogro Road to Orphir Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
- A965 B9055 (Brodger Road) to Stenness Village (carriageway reconstruction) - to be programmed
- A966 Gorseness Road (Tingwall end) to Woodwick Road (areas of reconstruction) - to be programmed
Cruise-related road closures:
Albert Street and Bridge Street, Kirkwall, will be closed between 10:00 and 16:00 on Thursday 31 August 2023. Note cruise-related closures are subject to change due to weather and/or fluctuation in passenger numbers.
