Road works update for week starting 24 July 2023

A summing up of road works underway or soon to start in the county - for week starting Monday 24 July 2023.
Resurfacing work on the A965 in Finstown (between the junction with Heddle Road and Baikie’s Stores) is ongoing. At present contractors are at the Evie junction, working to complete Phase 1 (Junction with the A965 and A966 Evie Road). Temporary three way traffic lights are in place for this phase - we ask drivers to be considerate and allow vehicles to filter into queues. Residents within the signed traffic management area should present their bins as they normal for collection. (On completion of the Phase 1 works, work will move to Phase 3 from the Finstown Post Office to Grandon Road - traffic management for this section of the work is yet to finalised – further updates will be provided in due course).
Patching works on Marwick Drive, Kirkwall near the junction with Stromberry are expected to start during next week (24 -28 July 2023). Temporary traffic lights will be in place. Short delays are likely for all traffic including the Number 9 Town (Kirkwall) bus service.
Works in the Dounby Primary School car park are underway and are expected to be completed by early next week (week starting 24 July 2023). To enable the works to be carried out in safety the car park will be closed during the working day with access over being provided overnight, over a temporary running surface. There will also be times when traffic control will be in place on the main road past the car park while work is carried out on the entrance.
Streetlighting and footway resurfacing works on Inganess Road are ongoing, with temporary traffic lights in place at the junction of Berstane Loan and Inganess Road. Short delays are likely for all traffic including the Number 9 Town (Kirkwall) bus service. The overall works are expected to take several months to complete.
Openreach works on Kirbister Road, Stromness is being carried out under road closure conditions and is expected to continue through to 19 September.
Scottish Water works on the A960 St Andrews from Groatsetter Road to Sebay Mill are ongoing, with traffic controlled by temporary lights.
Looking Ahead:
A960 (Deerness Road) in Kirkwall: Work is planned to start Monday 31 July 2023, and continue through to 16 August, between the Kirkwall 40mph signs and Heathery Loan (also known as Cattie Maggies and Tradespark), to reconstruct and bolster the edge of the road to cope with increased weight of heavy vehicles and volumes of traffic. Work will be carried out under temporary traffic lights with delays for all traffic including public bus services # 3 (Deerness) and #4 (Kirkwall Airport).
