Road works update for week starting 23 May
Date: 20 May 2022
Update on road works already underway or starting next week (week starting 23 May), including on Pickaquoy Road in Kirkwall which will also affect public bus services:
• Barswick Road, South Ronaldsay – Work should be completed by the end of the working day today (Friday 20 May).
• Windwick Road, South Ronaldsay – Works on Windwick Road in South Ronaldsay are planned to start on Monday 23 May and expected to last for around two weeks. As with the majority of our work of this nature the work will be carried out under road closure conditions. There are no diversion routes available so there will inevitably be delays to vehicular traffic using the roads. However crews will try to keep all delays to a minimum.
• The Meadows – The road closure at The Meadows (in relation to the Papdale play Park redevelopment) is expected to be removed by the end of the working day today, Friday 20 May. (The work to construct the raised table is complete but the road is closed today to allow the slab bedding to cure). There is still work to be carried out on the footways on either side of the raised table which is expected to last for another two weeks, meaning the footways are still closed meantime.
• Pickaquoy Road – Updated 23 May - Pickaquoy Road has now reopened.
(Work on this Scottish Water project started on 16 May with a road closure in place on Pickaquoy Road between its junction with Pickaquoy Loan and Muddisdale Road. The road closure is expected to be in place until late on Friday 27 May 2022. The work is being carried out by Orkney Builders (Contractors) Ltd (Tel 01856 871447) and involves laying a new foul sewer from the Scottish Water pumping station outside Glaitness Primary School across to cycle track adjacent to Ayre Road. Public bus services won’t be serving the majority of Pickaquoy Road and will not be passing the supermarkets or the Pickaquoy Centre. Instead they will travel down Great Western Road past the old bus station opposite Lidls, and then travel via the shorefront on Ayre Road, rejoining routes at the Ayre Mills roundabout.)
