Road works update for week starting 15 January

A summing up of road works underway or soon to start in the county - for week starting Monday 15 January 2024.

A961 Churchill Barriers – Work to replace fence posts on the barriers are planned to recommence during week commencing 15 January. This work involves all four Churchill Barriers. Traffic will be controlled with priority signage and speed reduction measures - with short delays to all traffic including the X1 (Stromness to St Margaret’s Hope) bus service. Whenever possible the works are taking place outwith school transport times.

Work to take down festive lighting is ongoing, with crews expecting to be in St Margarets Hope the week starting 15 January - closures will be kept as brief as possible.

A966 Gorseness Road (Tingwall end) to Woodwick Road – Works to complete this site are currently on hold  - the temporary traffic signals will remain in place until the work can be completed. Slight delays to traffic including the No 6 (Tingwall / Birsay) bus service.

A965, B9055 (Brodgar Road) to Stenness Village – The work to repair the areas of carriageway is currently on hold.

Laing Street, Kirkwall. Will be closed between 07:30 and 17:00 daily until 31 March 2024 to enable building works on the Old Library to be carried out.
Residents should present their recycling / waste bins as normal for collection.

Queen Street, Kirkwall – Will be closed from 9 to 16 January 2024 to enable new water connections to the new properties behind the Old Library.
Residents should present their recycling / waste bins as normal for collection.

A960, St Andrews & Toab - Scottish Water works are still ongoing but will be mainly off A960 and in fields during the next week or so.

Looking Ahead:

• A964 bends at Scapa Distillery and Smoogro Road to Orphir Village (carriageway repairs) – currently planned to start during Feburary 2024.
• A961 Barrier No1, carriageway repairs at the north end of the barrier – planned for end of January 2024

Looking further ahead:

• A966 Evie, near Evie Telephone Exchange – Drainage maintenance.
