Road works update as at 13 May

Date: 13 May 2022

Update on road works already underway or starting next week (week starting 16 May), including on Pickaquoy Road in Kirkwall which will also affect public bus services:

Pickaquoy Road, Kirkwall

Scottish Water have works planned from Monday 16 May, to lay a new foul sewer from the Scottish Water pumping station outside Glaitness Primary School across to cycle track adjacent to Ayre Road. A road closure will be in place on Pickaquoy Road from Monday 16 May between its junction with Pickaquoy Loan and Muddisdale Road and is expected to be in place for around two weeks. This is a Scottish Water project being carried out by Orkney Builders (Contractors) Ltd (Tel 01856 871447). Public bus services won’t be travelling down majority of Pickaquoy Road and will not be passing the supermarkets or the Pickaquoy Centre. Instead they will travel down Great Western Road past the old bus stop opposite Lidls, and then travel via the shorefront on Ayre Road, rejoining routes at the Ayre Mills roundabout.

Harray A986

Road works on the main A986 are ongoing between Grimeston Road and Refuge Corner. The current phase of work in this area is expected to be completed by the end of the day on 17 May 2022 - one lane is open under temporary traffic lights. Please keep everyone safe by heeding the speed limit and allowing extra time for your journey.

Denwick Road, Deerness

Work is currently underway and is expected to be completed by the end of the day on Monday 16 May 2022. The work is being carried out under road closure conditions with signed diversion routes being provided where possible.

South Ronaldsay

Patching work will start on Liddle Road, Flaws Road, Barswick Road and Windwick Road from Tuesday 17 May 2022 with the works planned to last for around two weeks. As with the majority of our works of this nature it will be carried out under road closure conditions. As much of the work is on roads where there is no diversion routes available there will inevitably be delays to vehicular traffic using the roads – crews will however try to keep all delays to a minimum.

The Meadows, Kirkwall

Work in relation to the redevelopment of the Papdale Play Park started on Monday 9 May 2022 as planned and are expected to take approximately two weeks to complete. The Meadows is closed to all vehicular traffic between its junctions with Thoms Street and the access to the bus parking at KGS - pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
