Road closure and bus service changes for central Kirkwall - 9 July 2021

Roads around central Kirkwall will be closed between midday and 2pm on Friday 9 July to enable a Freedom of Orkney ceremony and public procession to take place.
The roads closed will include:
- Albert Street
- Bridge Street
- Broad Street
- Castle Street
- Palace Road (Watergate to Broad Street)
- Victoria Street (Broad Street to Victoria Road)
- Tankerness Lane (One way section only)
Public Bus routes 4 (the Kirkwall Airport bus) and 9 (Kirkwall Town Service) will be affected by road closures. Passengers departing from Kirkwall should catch the bus from the Kirkwall Travel Centre rather than from Broad Street.
Bus number 4 will rejoin its usual route at the junction of Junction Road and Union Street. Bus number 9 will rejoin its usual route at Thoms Street.

The Freedom of Orkney was bestowed upon the Royal Navy Northern Diving Group by Orkney Islands Council in May this year, in recognition of their long association with commemorating those lost in the sinking of HMS Royal Oak and in keeping the Orkney community safe through the safe disposal of modern and historic ordnance, including torpedoes and mines.
