Remembrance in COVID times

Unable to gather the school for a Remembrance ceremony, Stromness Academy found a different way to remember.

Usually the school would involve everyone in a ceremony in collaboration with the local British Legion, but in COVID-19 times such gatherings are not permitted, so the school found a new way to pay their respects. Painted stones bearing the names of Stromness Academy pupils were laid at Stromness War Memorial by House Captains Shana, Ella and Ellys.

Volunteers Logan, Rachel, Madeline, Stella, Leah, Sofia, Brodie, Daniel, Robbie, Eileen, Mairin and Zoe painted some beautiful designs with the support of Mrs Johnstone (Principal Teacher of Art) and Mrs Sinclair (Librarian). A stone was then given to each Registration Class and pupils signed them, so that the whole school was represented.

This was arranged with Catriona Matheson of Stromness Royal British Legion, who was delighted to see the stones in place at the wreath-laying ceremony on Remembrance Sunday. They will remain there for passers-by to see in coming days.

 Jane Partridge, Head Teacher of Stromness Academy, said: “COVID continues to restrict school life, but this term we have resolved to focus on what we can do, rather than what we can’t.

“Last term was all about getting lessons up and running safely, but school is so much more than lessons. This is just one example of the creative thinking that is allowing us to re-invent wider school activities within the COVID rules, so that we can continue to offer pupils a rich educational experience.”
