Recruitment Underway for ‘Unique and Challenging’ OIC Chief Executive Role
Date: 28 April 2022
The search for a new Chief Executive to lead Orkney Islands Council gets underway this week.
The post holder will be responsible for providing leadership, vision and strategic direction across all of the Council’s services – as well as acting as the principal policy advisor to Elected Members.
A detailed application pack has been produced, setting out the key responsibilities and requirements of the job, as well as the numerous benefits of the main selling point of the role – life in Orkney itself.
The role of Chief Executive is currently being filled on an interim basis by John Mundell following the retirement of Alistair Buchan in 2019.
Mr Mundell is quite clear in his advice to those considering applying for the position – the role is not without its challenges, but the quality of life it would offer is second to none.
“It has been my genuine privilege to have helped Orkney Islands Council and our community over the last three years.
“Steering the ship through the unprecedented challenge that Covid 19 brought upon us has of course been tough but thanks to a talented and hardworking staff team, the unwavering supporting of elected members and our incredible local communities we have come through that – and the time has come to hand those responsibilities over.
“Orkney provides a beautiful setting in which to live and work and a wonderful opportunity to combine a fulfilling and challenging career with the best that the islands can offer in terms of lifestyle.
“Our vibrant and forward-thinking community is regularly voted the happiest and the best place to live in the UK. Our quality of life is second to none, with a rising population, excellent local services, and a multitude of opportunities and facilities to cater for whatever your interests outside of work may be.
“This role is a unique opportunity for an exceptional person who can evidence outstanding leadership qualities, high performance and a passion for driving forward the transformation of the council coupled to a shared ambition to provide the very best possible services for our island community.
“The job market is not easy at the moment – with many organisations, including other local authorities, looking to fill Chief Executive roles. Two previous attempts to fill the role have proved unsuccessful but I do believe the right person - for our organisation and for Orkney - is out there.
“This Council works tirelessly to safeguard our cherished islands and achieve the best possible outcomes for the people of Orkney. If you relish challenge and share our vision, this role is perfect for you.”
