Polling Station Review Underway

Polling Station

Orkney Islands Council is currently undertaking its statutory review of polling districts and polling places in Orkney.

Polling places are set up for people to vote in local and national elections.  Voters can attend a polling place to cast their vote – or vote by proxy or post.

There are 10 different polling locations on mainland Orkney.  Isles residents can come into the mainland to vote in person or apply for a postal vote.

Regular reviews of the location of polling stations are required under Section 18C of the Representation of the People Act 1983, as amended by the Electoral Administration Act 2006.

The review will allow communities to make comment on the current arrangements and on any proposed amendments.

Key changes being proposed are making the temporary use of The Pickaquoy Centre, Rendall Community Centre, Cromarty Hall and the Milestone Community Church as polling stations during the last few elections a permanent change - with all other polling stations in Orkney remaining as they are.

Karen Greaves is the Corporate Director for Strategy, Performance and Business Solutions, which has responsibility for the elections.  She said “Voting in local and national elections or referendums is important to our community and ensuring that our polling stations are situated in a place which is accessible and suitable is a key aspect of running a smooth and successful election.

“Review such as these are carried out every five years - and give folk an opportunity to raise any concerns they might have.”

The review period runs until Monday 16 December and full details can be accessed here - Statutory Review of Polling Districts and Places
