Point of Ness campsite re-opening delayed
Date: 4 April 2024
The re-opening of the Point of Ness campsite in Stromness has been put back to Saturday 13 April due to unavoidable delays with the works taking place on site.
Those with existing bookings have been advised and offered either a refund or alternative arrangements.
Works have been taking place since February to install new sewage systems in advance of this year’s tourist season, with the £126K works funded by Visit Scotland’s Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund.
A substantial amount of rock has been encountered as pipes have been laid, which has led to the delays.
The access road through the campsite has been closed whilst the work takes place and will remain so until closer to the re-opening time
Garry Burton is the Council’s Service Manager for Leisure and Culture. He said: “The Point of Ness campsite – with its beautiful views of Hoy Sound and Stromness – is hugely popular with visitors to Orkney and we have invested significantly in improvements to the site over the last few years.”
“It's all about making the site the best it can be, keeping it as a really important asset for Stromness' vital tourist offer, which the majority of folk have understood and been patient about. I’m thankful for the support that has been provided by some of the local groups who use the site - including local boat owners and sea swimmers.”
“It’s unfortunate that there has been a delay, but the conditions experienced on site have been more challenging than expected – anyone who has been involved in a major building project before will know that is not unusual. Our contractors are working hard to get the project completed and we hope to have the site open in the middle of the month, ready to welcome our visitors.”
