Orkney has the highest food safety standards in Scotland according to a recent survey by consumer group Which?.

Which? analysed all 32 local authorities using data submitted to Food Standards Scotland and ranked them based on the proportion of medium and high risk establishments meeting hygiene requirements, the proportion of total premises rated for risk and the proportion of planned interventions (such as inspections or follow-up actions) the authorities have achieved.

Orkney topped the table in Scotland and was placed seventh in the UK as a whole.

Orkney Islands Council’s Environmental Health team achieved 100% of their planned interventions with 94% of the 447 establishments in Orkney meeting compliance levels for food safety standards.

It is the responsibility of businesses to make sure they are meeting hygiene standards but it is up to local authorities to enforce compliance and enforcement is overseen by the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland.

“The Council plays an important role in ensuring food safety so I’m delighted that the Which? survey ranks us in first place among Scottish local authorities,” said Environmental Health Manager David Brown.

“Our staff provide advice and guidance to help food businesses comply with hygiene regulations – and take action when necessary to ensure good standards are met and maintained.

“It reflects well on Orkney that so many outlets – from shops and cafes to schools, hotels and mobile food vans – have been issued with certificates that demonstrate they are serious about their responsibilities to customers, food hygiene and food safety. It shows that Orkney is good and safe place to buy and eat food.”
