Olympic and Parish Cup events ignited at day care centres
Date: 18 June 2024
Great sporting events are for all ages as was witnessed recently when two Council-run day centres teamed up to compete in their annual Parish and Olympic Cup events.
Although put on hold due to Covid, Gilbertson and West Mainland Care Centre staff reignited the occasion in 2024 with two cups donated by local branches of the Royal British Legion.
Each centre holds heats for a fortnight to determine who will be in the finals for each centre. The West Mainland finalists compete for the Parish Cup, whilst those from Gilbertson Day Centre vie for the Olympic Cup.
Both centres came together at the Gilbertson Day Centre where service attenders enjoyed gaining points from activities including skittles, roll a ball and bean bag target – it's great for motor skills and keeping folk active without even realising it.
Senior Day Centre Officer for both, Kirsty Wallace, said: “Coming together makes competing for each of their respective cups a bit more special and it’s a great opportunity for people from both centres to meet up with old friends and make some new ones.
“We are very grateful to the Royal British Legion for their support and those taking part certainly seemed to enjoy it.”
The overall highest score of the day went to the Gilbertson Day Centre.
