Alan Dundas left school at 18 without the grades he’d been hoping for.
His first job was helping his dad on the farm where he grew up.
Despite not getting the exam results he wanted, Alan went to the then Robert Gordon Institute of Technology. He successfully gained a Chemistry Degree, and his first job was in a laboratory carrying out testing for the oil industry.
Throughout the years, Alan has had six employers working in both industry and government. He’s now Service Manager (Environmental Services) at the Council.
“When I was 30, I switched career and haven’t worked in a chemistry lab again. I moved to Orkney and have been based here ever since. The jobs I’ve held have given me the opportunity to travel to various parts of the UK, Europe and once I even made it to Brazil. It’s amazing what you can do from Orkney!”
His #NoWrongPath advice: “There are loads of opportunities out there. Don’t be frightened to try things. If it doesn’t suit, you can try something new.”
