New Members Sought for College Management Council

Date: 19 January 2018

Time: 02:25

Six new community and business representatives are being sought for Orkney Islands Council's College Management Council.

The College Management Council, established in March 2009 as a sub-committee of the Education, Leisure and Housing Committee, is responsible for the governance of Orkney College, the quality of education provided by the College, the estates strategy and its annual budget. The roles of members are particularly suited to those with a keen interest in education, research and learning or with experience in governance.

Membership is made up of five Councillors, four business representatives and four representatives from the community or voluntary organisations – to complete the membership four new business representatives and two community/third sector representatives are being sought.

The management council meets regularly throughout the year, with an expected time commitment of a few hours per month and there is no remuneration for the posts.

Councillor John Ross Scott, Chair of the management council, said: "I am keen to reshape the way the CMC works and bolster what is already a strong, committed and focused team by making representation far more meaningful for the community and business – and indeed the students – members, by allowing them more scope to bring their own life experiences into play.

“Those who run businesses in Orkney and members of the Orkney community – whatever age - will know what they want from their college. Their contribution towards future developments and innovation will be vital in taking Orkney College onward and upward in the years ahead.”

Euan Smith, one of the out-going business representatives, said: “Being a member of Orkney College CMC has been a rewarding and interesting role. Having strong views about the provision of Further and Higher education both locally and nationally, the role gave me the opportunity to contribute to the strategic and, on occasions, the practical development of Orkney College UHI and its role within the broader context of education throughout the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

"I have enjoyed the challenge of contributing to the work of this important institution. Being involved in the governance and strategic development of Orkney’s Further and Higher education provision has been fascinating and knowing that I have been part of the continued success of the College is very rewarding.
