New Bin Trial
Date: 8 August 2022
If you’re visiting beaches and other popular countryside locations in the next few weeks, you might spot a change in the bins.
The waste team are trialling ones that are better suited for the types of litter put in them – meaning they have smaller openings in the lid to allow for the disposal of litter and dog waste only.
Large bins currently provided at these sites are often used inappropriately, filled with household waste, bulky items or commercial waste meaning that they don’t have space for litter and dog waste.
We would like to remind residents that litter bins are for litter and dog waste only. Household waste can be taken to any Household Waste Recycling Centre and commercial waste must be taken to Chinglebraes or Bossack. If the bins are full, please don’t leave loose or bagged waste next to them.
If you are holding a beach clean, please plan to take larger amounts of waste to your nearest Household Waste and Recycling Centre. Don’t leave bags at the car park or near a road without letting OIC know ahead of time as they may get blown back to the sea.
Thank you for keeping Orkney tidy!
