Netballing superstar takes the top award

Sarah MacPhail bags the title of Orkney’s Sportsperson of the Year 2022.
The Scottish international netballer, who competed in the 2022 Commonwealth games, pipped Squash player Finlay Scott and fellow commonwealth games competitor, Taylah Paterson to the post. Taylah didn’t go home empty handed though, she received the award for Performance of the Year.
Meanwhile Orkney’s Young sportsperson of the Year 2022 went to Weight-lifter Angus Robertson for his record-breaking performances at various events in this past year.
Team of the Year was awarded to two of Orkney’s badminton legends, Moira Nicolson and Elaine Gray while the Young Team of the year when to Netball Orkney U17 Sirens District Squad.
Orkney Athletic and Running Clubs, Inga Linklater was named Volunteer of the Year and Megan Clouston was named Young Volunteer of the Year for her work with Stromness Youth Football Club.
The award for School Sports Volunteer of the Year went to David Scarth for his dedication to pupils at Dounby School.
Stewart Spence was named Official of the Year for his role as referee in many of the youth rugby games in Orkney and Orkney’s Women’s Football Clubs, Gary Skea took home Coach of the Year.
Michael Swanney, Active Schools Co-ordinator at the council was delighted with the event and said, “These awards are a fantastic showcase of Orkney Sport and all those who are involved in it. It gives recognition and praise to those who are normally just behind the scenes. The evening was a huge success, and we are thankful for everyone who helps make the event happen and look forward to seeing what 2023 brings in terms of Orkney Sports.”
