Natasha’s Law Reminder

Orkney Islands Council’s Environmental Health Team is reminding all food businesses and producers of the need to make sure they follow food labelling rules.
The reminder coincides with the anniversary of Natasha’s Law on 1 October, which introduced a new legal requirement for anybody selling food to the public to identify the presence of any the 14 mandatory allergens in their food. This followed the tragic death of 15-year-old Natasha Ednan-Laperpouse from a severe allergic reaction to sesame seeds.
Nick Long is the Council’s Environmental Health Manager. He said: “Orkney has a fantastic and diverse range of local foods and sometimes the food laws can seem daunting or even over the top. However, this really is a case that getting your labels right could save a life.”
The message comes on the back of another tragic death reported in the national press this month where Ceilia Marsh who had a dairy allergy died after consuming a mislabelled vegan product which contained milk.
Nick continued: “All businesses selling food to the public need to be registered with the Council and this means they will have access to specific advice and guidance from the Environmental Health team on the labelling requirements. Registration is free and done using a simple form on the Council’s website.”
