Naming ceremony for new pilot vessel

Orkney's new pilot launch was today officially named Scapa Pathfinder.
The name was chosen following a public vote earlier this year.
Twelve-year-old Abbie Craigie from Kirkwall was given the honour of performing the ceremony at Scapa Pier – after her name was drawn from the votes that topped the poll.
Having named the Scapa Pathfinder, Abbie then enjoyed a trip out into Scapa Flow with her family aboard the launch.
The 22-metre vessel arrived in Orkney earlier this month after a long sea journey from the shipyard in Spain where she was built.
She joins the John Rae and the Scapa Pioneer, the other pilot launches operated by in Orkney Marine Services.
The vessels play a vital role at the heart of harbour operations, enabling marine pilots to embark and disembark from vessels heading to and from berths and anchorages within the Orkney Harbours area.
Orkney Islands Council Convener Harvey Johnston said at the naming ceremony: “Pilots have to be put on and taken off ships at all times of the day or night and have to contend with constant variables of wind, wave, tide and visibility.
“Pilot boats need to be fast and powerful and have accomplished and experienced crews. This highlights the importance of good equipment and well-trained staff.”
Along with the other launches, the Scapa Pathfinder will enable the Council to continue providing a first-class, highly-professional service to the many and varied vessels that require pilotage in local waters, Councillor Johnston added.
