A “hobby” making fudge has led to a mouth-watering £100,000 raised for charity thanks to one of our long-serving early years practitioners.
Debbie Delday, aka Fundraising by Mrs Fudge, reached the milestone figure at the end of May – after dedicating 17 years to good causes.
Many local and national charities – CLAN Cancer Support, Orkney Charitable Trust, Macmillan to name a few - have benefited from her efforts, and it was her ambition to reach the £100k mark in 2024.
Debbie, who works in one of our primary schools, said: “After a successful start to the year, I had just £456 to raise to get to this huge milestone. I ran a couple of Lucky Number Games and hit £100,000 - so with your support, I've done it!
“To every single one of you who has supported my efforts over the years thank you. Whether you've bought fudge, numbers, bakers; donated prizes, sweeties, your time; family, friends, strangers; THANK YOU for your support.”
In celebration Debbie is holding another competition – this time giving away a £50 voucher to a randomly selected winner and £50 to a charity of their choice. This is running on her Fundraising by Mrs Fudge Facebook page and ends on Saturday 15 June.
Chair of the Council’s Education, Leisure and Housing Committee, Councillor Gwenda Shearer said: “What an outstanding effort by Debbie and many local and national charities are all the better off as a result of her hard work and kindness.
“It just shows what can be achieved by one person being supported by a wonderful community. Huge congratulations to Debbie on reaching this significant milestone. I have no doubt there will be many more pots of fudge on the cooker in the years to come!”
