Mapping Magnus talk comes to Birsay
Date: 28 May 2018
Time: 11:25
A talk taking place in Birsay next month will tell the story of an important research and archaeology project carried out as part of the Magnus 900 commemorations.
Mapping Magnus was a major community archaeology research and training project commissioned by Orkney Islands Council and carried out by the University of Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute, which delivered a programme of activities and events that explored the story of St Magnus and medieval Orkney.
Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund activities included archive research; storytelling and collecting; geophysical, walkover, coastal and noust surveys; excavations and community and schools workshops.
The talk, to be delivered by Dr Sarah Jane Gibbon and Dan Lee takes place in the Birsay Community Hall on 6 June at 19:30. The event is free and there is no need to book.

In 2017 Orkney marked the 900th anniversary of the death of St Magnus. Between April and December people from Orkney came together through a durational programme of activity to celebrate the life of St Magnus. The anniversary played host to a number of one-off projects whilst many of Orkney's best known festivals curated special activity and events linked with the St Magnus story.
