It was with mixed emotions that Pat Firth hung up her apron at Papdale Primary on Wednesday afternoon – after 31 years as a kitchen assistant at the school.
Pat joined the School Meals Service on 15 May 1993 and has remained at Papdale throughout her career.
Without doubt, the part she will miss most is working with “the lassies.”
“They are a brilliant team to work with, it is excellent hours and ideal for parents with young bairns – that's how I first got started at the school when mine were peedie.
“There’s been lots of changes over the years and it has been hard work, but I wouldn't have stayed for so long if I didn't love the banter that we have. I will miss the lassies and the routine but I’m looking forward to spending more time with my grandbairns and great grandbairn and getting out walking and babysitting.
“I will have a peedie while off, but I don't think I will be able to sit back and do nothing – I'm too young to put my slippers on yet!”
On Wednesday, the team gathered to wish her farewell with a lovely selection of flowers, gifts, money and vouchers. Pat was also presented with a retirement plaque.
Scott Pring, the Council’s Service Manager Corporate Catering, said: “Pat has remained a loyal and hardworking member of the team. She will be sorely missed by the pupils and staff alike.
“We would like to wish Pat all the best for the future. The hunt now goes on for a suitable person to fill Pat’s shoes.”
Chair of the Council’s Education, Leisure and Housing Committee, Councillor Gwenda Shearer, said: “To remain within one role at the same location for over 30 years speaks volumes about Pat, her colleagues and the job itself. On behalf of the Council, I thank Pat for her continued years of service and wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement.”
