Members of the Orkney Wheeled Sports Club have praised the “transformation” of the Kirkwall Skatepark thanks to recently completed refurbishment works.

Partnership working between Orkney Islands Council and the Club led to the enhancements and improvement measures being carried out.

OIC Leisure and Culture Service Manager, Garry Burton, said: “We are delighted with the works carried out by the original contractor for the park, Heddle Construction Ltd. The new elements will be something different for existing users, but also attract people that might not have used the park before.

“The park opened in 2005 so it required updating not just in terms of the surfacing but also to keep those who use it progressing by learning new skills. It was important to receive input from those who make most use of the skatepark and transform their feedback into reality where possible. It’s great to hear that there are many new users enjoying the facility.”

The works included resurfacing to required areas and the addition of three new features – a jumpbox, a rail and an extension to one of the embankments which also has a manual pad attached.

Wheeled sports enthusiasts, Jean Roi and Inga Antonio say the new features and design is being well used already.

Inga said: “I am just totally blown away with the work at the park and could not keep the smile off my face last week when I was there with Jean! The new additions have totally transformed the space and have been designed in such a way that they are suitable for a range of wheeled sports users. We had folk on bikes, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards and roller boots all using the features which made the whole project so worthwhile! We are so lucky to have such a versatile area within the community which we can all enjoy.”

Jean added: “The result is great, and we’ve already seen new faces at the skatepark using the newly build features which is good as it contributes to increased participation in sport and physical activity levels. The works mean that intermediate level users will be able to progress in the sports including skateboarding, BMX and scooters.”

The Council’s Sport and Leisure Service have also put new signs at the entrance to the park.
