KGS student secures place in national anti-racism competition final with artwork
Date: 9 June 2022
An Orkney student has used her creative talents to “Show Racism the Red Card” winning her way through to the finals of a national anti-racism education charity competition.
S4 student at Kirkwall Grammar School, Marta Bogucka, created a piece of artwork which judges described as being of “outstanding calibre”.
Marta and up to three guests have been invited to attend the Show Racism the Red Card charity ceremony at Glasgow’s Hampden Park on Friday 10 June when the winners will be announced, alongside entertainment and a mini educational session.
Marta says she was inspired to take part as a result of anti-racism work over the years at the school.
“I think it is a good thing to be part of this project that campaigns for equality in society. I am happy to have won through in one of the Show Racism the Red Card Creative Competition categories and hope my entry helps to change minds and attitudes.”
Theo Ogbhemhe, Teacher of Religious Moral and Philosophical Studies, at KGS said: “It is a thing of joy to see young people meaningfully engaging with and promoting the rights of all in relation to anti-racism, including their right to non-discrimination. Marta has made us proud, and I hope her feat is a tonic for us as a collective to continue to appreciate and respect diversity of experiences and backgrounds, whilst challenging discrimination and injustice.”
Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) is the leading UK anti-racism education charity. They produce resources and deliver workshops to equip Scotland’s young people with the tools to tackle racism and discrimination. SRtRC’s Creative Competition is free to enter for all Scottish schools, is open to young people of all ages (P1 to S6) and is a great, positive way to engage young people’s interest in anti-racism. They accept submissions in artwork, creative writing, poetry, music, film, posters, t-shirt designs, shoe/football boots design.
The competition categories support the main aims and capabilities of the Curriculum for Excellence.
