KGS Rice Challenge Success
Date: 8 March 2023
Folk in Orkney have been thanked for their generosity which has seen KGS students complete their 90kg rice challenge in just four days!
They have sold their target of 90 bags of rice raising enough money to send a young person to secondary school for one year in Malawi.
KGS Religious Moral and Philosophical Studies teacher, Theo Ogbhemhe, who supported the students with the challenge, said: “If education is the key, then we are doing something beautiful because we are making a difference to real people in the developing world. We are delighted that thanks to your help and support we have completed the 90Kg rice challenge for 2023!”
The challenge not only benefits the young people of Malawi ensuring they can get an education, but also the farmers and their families thanks to the Fairtrade sales via JTS.
JTS was set up to facilitate the import and distribution of fairly traded products to the UK and supports the farmers of Northern Malawi by providing a fair and sustainable market for their Kilombero rice.
Theo added: “JTS challenged schools, such as KGS (as well as churches and other organisations) to sell 90kg of rice – this is the amount of rice sold that would enable a Malawian farmer to pay for a year’s basic secondary education for one child.
“Thanks to the support of people in Orkney we reached our target within days of the appeal.”
