KGS Anti-Racism Group reach out to local businesses for support
Date: 22 April 2024
A group of students from Kirkwall Grammar School are appealing to local businesses for support in the latest chapter of their antiracism campaign.
The Anti-Racism Group – under the guidance of Theo Ogbhemhe, Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies teacher – are seeking funding to help with the cost of producing a new anti-racism story book for children telling the story of “Beuy the black Orkney vole”.
Working in collaboration with acclaimed writer, Joy Idoko, based in Dundee, the students have written and illustrated the children's book. It tells the story of Beuy and the Orkney Ba’ of the vole world. Beuy thinks his black fur looks ugly and dirty and seeks the help of friends to become ginger/white, shiny, and the envy of other voles.
The group is also looking for support in the publication of challenging racism “vocabulary conversation cards" focused on conversations about race. The cards explain what racism is, how it happens, why it should be never acceptable and what people can do to eradicate it. Businesses supporting the projects would be thanked and advertised on the back of the book and cards.
Theo said they received just over £4,000 last year and £900 this year from the Scottish Government towards anti-racism events. Whilst they are grateful for this, the students continue their own fundraising to allow them to meet all their targets.
Theo added: "We plan to distribute the cards in Orkney, including libraries and those businesses who ally with us to help make a difference. We are very grateful for the support we have had from Sclaters and Sutherlands so far and hope others may come on board.
“The group are continuing this great work and making arrangements for a number of important events to raise awareness. It is a thing of joy to see young people focusing on topics they collectively feel so passionate about.”
If you would be interested in finding out more about the work of the group or supporting their activities, contact KGS and ask for Head Teacher Claire Meakin on 01856872102.
