Keep an eye our for active travel survey
Date: 20 February 2023
Orkney Islands Council is urging local people to help shape and improve active travel options in their community, by taking part in a new survey launched jointly with Sustrans and being directly delivered to households in coming days.
The ‘Orkney Travel Matters’ survey is aimed at helping the Council understand how, why and where local people travel, and the barriers to active travel which is using walking, wheeling and cycling to make everyday journeys. The outputs from this questionnaire will help inform policy decisions and guide investment.
It follows on from the wide ranging ‘Orkney Matters’ consultation last year which found that many local people would like to see more sustainable active travel options and infrastructure in their communities.
Every household will receive a leaflet inviting them to take part in coming days.
The survey should take no longer than 15 minutes to complete, and anyone taking part and participants can choose to be entered into a free prize draw to win £100 local vouchers and other prizes.
Susan Shearer, Service Manager for Development and Marine Planning said: “The recent Orkney Matters consultation highlighted the importance of transportation across the County. It identified a strong community aspiration to walk and cycle more. For some there were also concerns over road safety, the speed of traffic and how this affects a person’s choice to walk, wheel or cycle and how often we would make such journeys.
Chair of Orkney Islands Council’s Development and Infrastructure Committee, David Dawson, said: “We’d urge everyone in Orkney to look out for their leaflet and respond to the survey – doing so will help us to work effectively to encourage sustainable travel across Orkney’s communities.”
To achieve a representative cross section of the Orkney public, residents are asked to please complete just ONE survey per household.
Please complete the survey by 31 March.
If you, or another person in your household, are unable to complete the survey online and require a postal version of the questionnaire please contact us - text 07974561181 or email survey administrators Eyland Skyn
