Junction Road update
Date: 18 April 2018
Time: 04:29
The Council has held further discussions today with businesses affected by road works on Junction Road in Kirkwall.
Representations to the Council have been made on behalf of William Shearer, McConechy's Tyre and Exhaust Centre, Bruce’s Stores and the Happy Haddock.
Gavin Barr, Director of Development and Infrastructure, said: “These are essential structural repairs to this key road and it is important to highlight that despite this, businesses are of course open and accessible to the public on foot and by car.
“However, we’ve recognised the challenges that this has caused these businesses and have worked with them to look at ways to help them while the work is underway.
“On the back of these discussions, we’re going to be accelerating the work on the section between the Junction Road mini roundabout and the bottom of the Clay Loan.
“I’m very grateful to the staff involved who will be working extended hours and over the weekend and we aim to have that section – including access to and from Clay Loan – open again from late evening on Monday (23 April).
“In the meantime, as a further support to the town centre businesses during this period, we’ll be providing all-day free parking in the Gunn’s Close car park, adjacent to the businesses, from tomorrow (Thursday) until this section of work is completed.
“Our discussions with the businesses were constructive and I am pleased that they mentioned the professionalism and helpfulness of the staff carrying out the work, which is clearly appreciated by the businesses and public.”
Signs stating that businesses are open as usual are in place. Road staff are on hand to help customers get to the businesses safely, as well as to the Gunn’s Close car park.
