Junction Road road works start Monday 30 June
Date: 17 June 2022
Orkney Islands Council’s Roads Services will be starting work on Junction Road on Monday 20 June 2022.
The works will affect Junction Road between the access to St Magnus Lane car park (the car park opposite Orkney Library and Archive) and access to Albert Street car park (the car park at rear of M and Co/near Kiln Corner), with work currently planned to last for two weeks.
There will be times when - in addition to Junction Road being closed - Castle Street and West Castle Street will also be closed to traffic in order to carry out the work in safety.
Work is planned to start at the crossroads of Junction Road and Castle/West Castle Street, with closures in this area from Monday.
The Council will be working with the contractor to try and maintain as much access as possible and minimise closure of this junction, but there will undoubtedly be traffic delays as this work is carried out.
There will be various signed diversion routes in place to help motorists avoid the works, and we ask that drivers pay attention to the signs and plan ahead to avoid the area if possible.
Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.
All bus services will at times travel to / from Kirkwall Travel Centre via Great Western Road (avoiding Junction Road) before rejoining their normal routes.
Passengers aiming to travel in the central area of Kirkwall should note:
- The Airport bus will not be able to serve Castle Street, Broad Street, Palace Road, Dundas Crescent or Clay Loan. It will rejoin its normal route at the bottom of Clay Loan (Union Street).
- The #9 Kirkwall Town service will not serve Castle Street, Broad Street or Palace Road, and will rejoin its normal route at Thoms Street.
Residents and businesses affected have been written to and signs giving advance warning of the works have been in place the last two weeks.
The Council apologises to the travelling public for the disruption this work will cause, and thanks them in advance for their cooperation and understanding as we carry out this vital maintenance on one of the county’s most heavily used roads, as we start on the 2022-23 roads maintenance programme.
