John Street Retaining Wall Repair

Date: 18 March 2020

Time: 04:59

A contractor has been appointed and work will begin shortly to start repairs to a damaged section of wall in Stromness.

In July 2019 the retaining wall, situated along John Street in Stromness, was struck by a vehicle attempting to manoeuvre into one of the parking bays. This caused widespread cracking and damage over a significant length of the wall.

Local business - BDS Surfacing and Contractors Ltd - will shortly begin the works.

To repair the retaining wall, it is proposed that damaged sections are taken down and rebuilt with reinforcements. The railings will be replaced as they are in a poor state of repair, and a new wet dash render finish applied over the full height of the new wall.

To further protect the wall in future the narrow footway will be further extended to provide greater clearance between the wall and vehicles parking on John Street.
During the works there will be some loss of parking on John Street, as well as within the Ferry Road Car Park.

The lane that runs alongside the Ferry Inn will have periods where it will be temporarily closed to allow critical aspects of the works to be undertaken safely.
The work to repair the wall is expected to take 6 weeks.
