Improvements due at Stromness Campsite

Date: 5 April 2018

Time: 09:22

A redevelopment project is about to get underway at the Ness Campsite in Stromness.

The project will see hard-standings created in the shoreside campsite area for the parking of caravans and campers, resurfacing to provide vehicle access and improvements to charging points and electrical cabling.

Repairs are also required to fencing around the site following an incident of vandalism in October.

It is expected that work will be completed in May in advance of the campsite's peak time. The installation of the hard standings will allow the campsite’s season to be extended into the early winter season, where previously the ground may have been too wet for vehicles.

Councillor Rob Crichton represents Stromness and the South Isles and is Chair of the Council's Education, Leisure and Housing Committee. He said: "The Stromness campsite, with its unrivalled views of the town, Scapa Flow and Hoy Sound, is hugely popular and this popularity is only likely to increase further with the advent of RET. Visitors to Stromness provide a great energy to our town over the tourist season and it’s important to us that the facilities available to them are fit for purpose. I look forward to this work getting underway."

The Point of Ness campsite is situated on the shoreside overlooking Stromness, one mile west of the pierhead and ferry. The site provides dramatic views to the hills of Hoy and is placed in a quiet location with a shoreline walk from the site.

The site is open from the beginning of April to the end of September and is suitable for touring caravans, motorhomes and tents.

Bookings are advisable and can be made via the 'Point of Ness Campsite' web page.
