If you’re looking for adventure, then you’ve come to the right place!
Date: 22 December 2021
Orkney is to feature in the first two episodes of BBC Scotland’s The Adventure Show in the new year – and two of our very own Development and Infrastructure team will be featuring.
Inga Antonio who provides admin assistance to operational support and Jean Roi, a civil engineer, are members of the Orkney Wheeled Sports Club and will be part of the first episode to kick off the show’s new series on 6 January at 8pm with presenter Lauren MacCallum looking at the thrills the local skatepark has to offer.
Inga said: “We are part of Orkney Wheeled Sports Group who are hoping to rejuvenate our local skate park on Picky Road and are working closely with the OIC to do this. Our aims were to fundraise enough to initially add some extra equipment to the park such as some grind rails, ramps and many pads - then in the future we would like a full rebuild of the park. But, of course, the coronavirus put a stop to this!
“The Adventure Show approached us last August to do a piece on sporting activities in Orkney so we were both filmed and interviewed for the show at the skate park , I was recovering from a torn calf muscle after playing football so there isn’t a lot of excitement from me!”
You can check out the Orkney Wheeled Sports Club on Facebook.
Also in the first episode Amy Irons will get a taste of sea kayaking with Kristian Cooper who explains why Orkney's coastline, with its sea cliffs and caves, is a world-class paddling destination.
Meanwhile, Lauren MacCallum also heads over to Hoy, while Duncan McCallum learns how to stay safe on the water.
In the second episode on 13 January Amy Irons experiences sea cliff climbing on Mainland Orkney as Duncan McCallum shows her the attraction of vertical rock. They travel to Sanday, where resident marine scientist Emma Neave-Webb highlights the danger from climate change.
Back in Kirkwall, Lauren MacCallum discovers the success story behind the local climbing wall and why Orkney’s young climbers are now amongst the best in Scotland.
Tune into BBC Scotland at 8pm on 6 January and 13 January to see Orkney being showcased.
