Glaitness School Run to Net Zero - Walk to School Week – Monday 20-24 March
Date: 23 March 2023
Time: 02:00
Families, bairns and staff from the Glaitness School community will be celebrating the end of the first part of their journey to Net Zero with a “Walk to School Week”.
By Friday 24 March – the last day of the Walk to School Week - it is hoped that most families who are able will walk, cycle or share a lift to school with the ultimate aim of reducing CO2 emissions created by the school run by 80%.
To celebrate, on Friday the main school car park will be closed and led by the “Net Zero Heroes”, bairns will paint and decorate it with some of the things which could be in the space for the car park if it wasn’t needed for cars!
Staff from the Heriot-Watt University Orkney campus Islands Centre for Net Zero will be there to talk to families, staff and bairns about the Net Zero Project and what is needed to help and support the change to more environmentally sustainable ways of getting to school. The information they collect will help plan for a Net Zero future for Kirkwall.
Families are invited to come into the dining hall from 2pm to talk to the children and staff about how they have found the experience of trying to walk, cycle or car share and their views about how the school can achieve its target of an 80% reduction.
Refreshments will be served and it is a chance to meet with children and talk to them about their work and see a wonderful mural created by the children of their vision of the Kirkwall of the future.
