Full Council to Give View on Quanterness Wind Farm Planning Application

Date: 8 July 2020

Time: 11:27

Orkney Islands Council has decided that, if required, the Full Council will meet to give their view on the 'Orkney's Community Wind Farm Project - Quanterness' planning application.

The Scottish Government called in the planning application for the Council-owned wind farm project in March this year, following a request from the Council.

The Scottish Government will now act as the planning authority and may consult the council as the Local Planning Authority.

At Full Council last week (30 June) Councillors considered a series of options on how that consultation response should be arrived at - by Planning Officers, by the Planning Committee only, or by the Full Council - with the subsequent decision being that it should be all Councillors who should be involved in the response.

The Council’s consultation response would be considered alongside responses from other consultation bodies. A Reporter will assess the application in relation to relevant policies and other material considerations, and thereafter will submit a report with recommendations to the Scottish Ministers for their consideration and determination.

If the Hoy and Faray applications are also called in by the Scottish Government the same process will be followed.

Through ‘Orkney’s Community Wind Farm Project’ the Council’s Strategic Projects team is investigating three sites for potential community wind farms in the county – in Hoy, Faray in the North Isles, and at Quanterness in St Ola.

The committee report is available here on our Committee Reports section.
