Flooding update as at midday on Tuesday 20 August 2024
Date: 20 August 2024
Time: 12:00
Flood forecasting from SEPA indicates a risk of coastal flooding at a number of vulnerable locations around Orkney this evening (Tuesday 20 August) and/or Wednesday evening, due to a combination of high tide levels, storm surges associated with a low pressure weather system and strong winds.
- St Margarets Hope - the Council’s Roads team is rolling out floodstops at Cromarty Square, as pictured attached, this afternoon, and leaving sandbags adjacent to the Cromarty Square to be used by the public if required. In the leadup to the floodstops being deployed, we’d ask folk to remove any parked cars from the Cromarty Slip/Front Road area, wherever possible.
- Burray – Burray Pier may be affected by coastal flooding on Wednesday night. Sandbags will be available from this afternoon at the Burray pier.
- Stromness - may be affected by coastal flooding on Wednesday night. Sandbags for public use will be available from the Council’s Garson depot from this afternoon.
- Hoy (Myre Bay) - may experience coastal flooding on Wednesday night.
- Westray (Tuquoy) - may experience coastal flooding on Wednesday night.
- Sanday - Silverhall, Quivals and Cata Sands may experience coastal flooding on Wednesday night.
Anyone signed up Floodline | Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) should keep an eye out for notifications relating to their area.
