Orkney’s Kali Morris may be only seven, but she’s getting quite accustomed to receiving a special delivery in the post!
The P3 pupil at Firth Primary recently received two Royal letters, which have pride of place in her “Royal box”, joining another she was sent some time ago.
The response on behalf of the Prince and Princess of Wales outlined how “immensely touched” William and Kate had been that Kali should take the trouble to write.
The letter from Kensington Palace stated: “The Prince and Princess of Wales have asked me to thank you for the lovely letter and photograph you sent in which you wrote so enthusiastically about your family history.
“They were most interested to learn about the history of your Jubilee cardigan that was originally knitted by your great great grandmother, Stella Craigie, from HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation in 1953.
“The Prince and Princess of Wales will greatly miss HM The Queen but were so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. I do hope that you had a nice trip to London in July.”
Kali also has letters from the late Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Princess Royal.
Kali’s mum, Gemma explained how the latest special deliveries came about.
“As part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Kali was wearing a cardigan her great-great granny, Stella Craigie, made for her daughter, Ada Spence (Kali’s great granny) to wear on the Queen’s Coronation, almost 70 years ago!
“Kali wrote to the Queen and the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the end of June telling them about the cardigan and included some photos of herself wearing it during this year’s Jubilee celebrations and of Ada wearing it back in 1953 for the Coronation.
“Sadly, when the Queen passed away Kali was really sad and was aware there would not be a reply coming. I suggested we could send them to King Charles and Princess Anne instead and see if we got any other responses.
“A few weeks later she was delighted to receive a response from the now titled Prince and Princess of Wales’s office and then also from Princess Anne’s lady in waiting.
“Kali was really interested to note the difference in postmark from her original Royal letter… and even more so when she discovered a post box in Kirkwall with King George’s cypher!
“She is definitely quite the Royal fan now and keeps her growing collection of special letters in her ‘Royal box’. Kali hasn’t quite given up hope of receiving a response from King Charles yet and has said she really wants to meet Princess Kate!”
In July, the Morris family went to London and among the highlights was a tour of the Royal sites- Buckingham Palace (and changing of the guard) Kensington Palace, the Tower of London (including the Crown Jewels) and the Buckingham Palace Mews.
Gemma added: “The Mews was a highlight for her as we got to see all the Royal carriages including the Gold State Coach -it was huge and you could get so close to it and there were no queues! Because our trip was only a few weeks after the jubilee Kali was so delighted to see so many of the places she had seen on the TV during the celebrations.”
For Kali’s birthday this year, her auntie Laura crocheted Kali her very own Queen Elizabeth II.
