Drop-in to find out more about the digital switchover!

Date: 2 April 2025

Time: 09:00

Two drop-in sessions offering support and information for people on the ‘switch-off' of analogue phone lines are coming to Orkney next week.

These sessions are being run by Orkney Islands Council and AbilityNet, as a charity that predominantly supports older and disabled people to improve their digital skills, but the sessions are open to all.

In 2023, BT announced the switch to its new digital home phone service, Digital Voice. Up to January 2027, most telephone providers will be moving their customers from older analogue landlines over to new upgraded landline services using digital technology - this is collectively known as 'the digital switchover' and Digital Voice is BT's initiative as part of the switchover.

The upgrade to Digital Voice means calls will be made over the broadband network rather than the 40-year-old analogue network.

The events will take place on:

Wednesday 9 April – Stromness – Warehouse Buildings, John Rae Room – 11.00-15.00.

Thursday 10 April – Burray – Burray Hall – 13.00 – 16.30.

Folk are encouraged to drop-in and have a one-to-one conversation about the digital phone switch over with someone who can answer questions or address concerns about making the switch when the time comes.

There is no need to pre-book for any of the sessions, just turn up.

Chrissie Matthews from The Learning Link – CLDE’s Adult & Family Learning team, will be on hand to help. She said: “Accessing online services such as booking tickets, ferries, video calls with family and friends, keeping up-to-date with current affairs, and so much more is an assumption that everyone has.

“Unfortunately for many, they are from a time when digital skills were never even dreamt of, so they have been left behind and have little interest at ‘their age’ to try it now.

“Well, they are wrong! This is a golden opportunity for those excluded to learn some very basic skills, including staying safe online.  They will learn with others in a safe and supported environment, with digital devices being loaned to those who don’t own one.

“The whole experience will be fun, relevant to your interests, and support will be on-going throughout the programme.”

Chris Grant, Community Relationship Team Lead (North UK) at AbilityNet said: “AbilityNet is thrilled to bring digital voice engagements back to Orkney, aiming to enhance digital accessibility and inclusion within the community. Our previous events have shown a tremendous response, particularly in Kirkwall, which has been four times busier than other locations. This success is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the local team, ensuring that everyone can benefit from our services.

“A significant part of our decision to return is the exceptional support we've received from The Learning Link’s Chrissie Matthews and Ewan Kennedy, the Council’s Graduate Trainee (Digital Engagement & Enterprise). Their commitment and enthusiasm have been invaluable, making them true assets to the Council. During my visit to Kirkwall last month, I was particularly impressed by their efforts and the warm welcome they extended. Their support has been instrumental in our mission, and we look forward to continuing our work together to make a positive impact in Orkney.”

Ewan said: “Through these events we are aiming to help residents and businesses learn more about the digital switchover. It is great that AbiltyNet are coming back to Orkney and visiting different venues in different areas this time.

“We are hoping folk will drop in for some support, and that could be to ask questions and solve issues with their digital devices or more specific asks around what the digital switchover may mean for them. Folk can stay for it all or come and go for parts that may interest them.

“Folk are often put off by some of the jargon around the digital switchover, that is why these events are being held so we can help residents learn more about what is involved and how to access help if they need it.”
