Delays likely on Churchill barriers as survey starts

Date: 18 April 2017

Time: 01:40

Orkney Islands Council is advising drivers of likely delays and disruptions on the Churchill Barrier Number 1 in coming weeks as a 3D survey of the road surface gets underway from Wednesday 26 April.

A single lane system will be in operation on Churchill Barrier Number 1 while work is carried out, with short periods of full closures while laser scanning takes place. Traffic signs will be in place during periods of restriction.

It’s expected the work will take around three days to complete – but with the work being highly weather dependent, lane closures could be in place, on and off, for around a week.

Recent inspections have showed there has been a deterioration in the condition of the road surface across part of the causeway.

Next week’s 3D survey has been arranged to help provide a detailed picture of the current condition of the surface of the road. Options will then be considered on how to address deterioration.
