Curtain rises on KAOS centenary exhibition
Date: 6 November 2024
Time: 12:00
Taking centre stage within the Orkney Museum next week (9 November) is the Kirkwall Amateur Operatic Society’s exhibition celebrating 100 years of music and drama in the county.
The exhibition, entitled 100 years of KAOS will run in the Exhibition Room on the first floor until Christmas Eve and features a collection of memorabilia from a century of showmanship and performances.
Sarah Gilmour, vice-president of Kirkwall Amateur Operatic Society, said: “In November 1924, a band of like-minded performers gathered with an interest in forming an operatic society. The following May, Kirkwall Amateur Operatic Society presented its debut show, The Mikado, for an audience at Kirkwall’s Temperance Hall.
“This was just the beginning. A hundred years on, KAOS is a stalwart of Orkney’s vibrant amateur drama community.
“This exhibition will mark the beginning of a series of events celebrating our centenary, including our upcoming show, Evita.
“As we mark 100 years of KAOS, we are also celebrating a more recent milestone in our society’s history, as we begin fundraising efforts for our newly purchased headquarters.
“We hope you will join us in marking this special occasion and looking back on the joy our shows have brought the community over the past century.
“Keep an eye out in the coming months for further events celebrating KAOS 100, as we set down roots for the next century.”
The Orkney Museum is open Monday – Saturday from 10:30 – 12:30, 13:30 – 17:00. Admission is free.

It's almost a century since KAOS staged its first production, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado, at the Temperance Hall in Kirkwall in May 1925.
