School Milk Day Stephen Clackson

The bairns at Orkney’s schools – and two special visitors – enjoyed an “udderly” amazing menu dedicated to World School Milk Day on Wednesday (25 September)!

North Isles Councillors Stephen Clackson and Mellissa Thomson happened to be at Shapinsay School on Wednesday giving a presentation to pupils on their role as councillors as part of a school project learning about “Our Community”.

They were able to join pupils tucking into some “legen-dairy” goodies created thanks to milk from the Council’s local supplier, Crantit Dairy. “Moo-ving” swiftly, the school cooks whizzed up toad in the hole, Yorkshire puddings, milk sponge pudding and there was the usual offering of milk to drink.

The verdict was a big thumbs up from all!

Councillor Clackson said: “And not to forget the yoghurt (which I had for my dessert).  Milk can make a meal almost on its own:  a drink as it is, as butter and cheese in your sandwich, and in the form of yoghurt, quark or ice cream for dessert. All baby mammals, from pygmy shrews to blue whales, thrive on it.”

Orkney’s Manager of Corporate Catering, Scott Pring, said: “We celebrate a number of special themed menu days throughout the school calendar. It’s a chance for the pupils to learn a bit more about special occasions that are celebrated throughout the year, but also the importance of sourcing local produce where possible. Themed days add a bit of variety to the menu and give our school cooks something different to prepare.

“We were delighted to hear some great feedback about our school meals offering from our North Isles councillors who happened to be at school during World School Milk Day.”

Dairy free alternatives were available.
