Covid-19 – Recycling Centres and waste services current guidance

Recycling Centres

The five Recycling Centres in Orkney – at Hatston, Garson, Cursiter, St Margaret’s Hope and Bossack – remain open as normal at present.

However, it may be necessary to temporarily close the Recycling Centres at short notice, or to suspend reception of certain materials, in light of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.

Site staff have been advised to maintain a social distance from users which may impact the level of assistance they can provide at the facility. The council asks that people only make necessary trips to the centres and allow additional time for maintaining a social distance from others while there.

These measures also apply to the Waste Transfer Stations at Chinglebraes and Bossack where contractors are visiting to deposit trade waste and may come into contact with OIC staff.

Waste disposal

National advice for anyone self-isolating with symptoms of coronavirus, or living with someone who does, is to put any personal waste (such as used tissues and disposable cleaning cloths) within disposable rubbish bags and then:

• Double bag them.

• Tie the bags securely.

• Store bags for at least 72 hours before putting them in your grey bin.

• Ensure the bagged waste is securely contained within the grey bin.

• On collection day, ensure the bin lid is fully closed.

All other household waste should be disposed of as normal.
