Council’s very own “Iron Man” takes on marathon challenge for cancer charity!
Date: 22 August 2023
James Green will forever now be known affectionately as the council’s very own “Iron Man”!
For the Team Manager (Marine Planning) is taking on his first iron distance triathlon this weekend consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and a marathon distance run of 26.2 miles.
This incredible feat of endurance will take place on Saturday 26 August in Orkney and James is putting himself through the paces to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
He said: “I think we have all been affected by cancer, whether it be yourself or someone you care about. I have close friends and family that have gone through horrific - but lifesaving treatments.
“The only way to tackle it is to continue to understand what causes it and find ways to prevent it through research.”
James is keen for folk to join him along the route, whether that be for a section of the cycle or a short stint on the run.
“If you're in Orkney that weekend and fancy a swim, cycle or run, I'd love to have you. It's an epic distance and something I've not come even close to doing before, so I may be a little nervous! Any donation, large or small, will help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. And your support will most definitely help get me to the that finish line.”
Check out the route and maps (in the discussion tab) on this Facebook page here.
Cancer survival rates have doubled over the past 40 years. Consistent progress is being made but improvements to technology and ground-breaking work offer new opportunities to find different ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer and improve survival rates even further. Help James by donating to his challenge so he can help Cancer Research UK improve results even faster.
