Council Convener praises sporting achievement as Orkney retains Stuart Cup

Council Convener Graham Bevan says Orkney’s junior inter-county athletes and coaches should be “incredibly proud of a sensational sporting performance” at the weekend, which saw the local team lift the Stuart Cup to the delight of the Orkney public.
Orkney was a sea of junior red and blues, with the final tally following a weekend of football, netball, swimming, hockey and athletics as Orkney – 164 – and Shetland – 135.
Councillor Bevan said: “There is a steely determination by athletes on both sides to win this coveted cup and Orkney put on a show against a talented Shetland team that didn’t disappoint - everyone involved should hold their heads high.
“Every point counts during the Stuart Cup – named after Tom Stuart, Shetland’s Chief Constable in 1947 who contributed the trophy - and over the years Junior Inter-County has inspired a fiery determination in the sporting achievements of Orkney and Shetland. This year was no different and bodes well for preparations for Orkney 2025.
“On behalf of the Council, many congratulations to everyone who was involved in any way in making this year’s event such a success.”
Chair of the Council’s Education, Leisure and Housing Committee, Councillor Gwenda Shearer, added: “What an amazing weekend from start to finish – you were in no doubt when Orkney scored a goal or came out on top given the roar that followed!
“It’s important to note the year-round effort that goes into preparing for these events. The athletes, coaches, volunteers, parents, grandparents who get up - often on a dreich windy and wet day – and turn up at training. Without that commitment, success stories such as we witnessed at the weekend simply wouldn't happen.
“Our thanks must also go to the Council’s committed Sport and Leisure team who strive to ensure coaching is at the highest possible standard, alongside working with partners to ensure our facilities and equipment are the best they can be.
“I have no doubt this win will have whetted the appetite of many for the Islands Games being hosted by Orkney next year and I hope as a community we rally to get behind our athletes and put on a show next July that locals and visitors will remember, for all the right reasons, for years to come.
“I echo the Convener’s congratulations to our 2024 trophy winners – there is no doubt in my mind that your spirit and outstanding performances will have inspired many of our future athletes to strive to succeed as you have done.”
