Community Justice Event

An event is being held in Orkney on Friday (19 May) looking at redesigning community justice and how it can help improve the community and lives within that community.

‘Redesigning Community Justice’ takes place in the Albert Hotel from 19.00 to 20.30 and features four key speakers:

  • Jon Humphreys, Criminal Justice Manager for Orkney Islands Council, who will set the Community Justice scene in Orkney.
  • Karyn McCluskey, who is the Chief Executive of Community Justice Scotland – her presentation is titled ‘Changing Scotland – How do we transform lives’
  • Peter White, who is the Chief Executive of ‘Positive Prison ? Positive Future’ a Scottish charity working to reduce the harm of offending and reoffending – his presentation is titled ‘Punishment, Opportunities, Choices’.
  • Paul Brannigan, an actor who has personal experience of the criminal justice system. His presentation is titled  ‘Lived Experience – The Inner Conflict’.

The following local services will be available for information and advice: Y-People, Women’s Aid Orkney, Victim Support, SCRA, Orkney Rape Crisis, VAO’s Connect Project.

The event is being run by Orkney’s Community Justice Partnership.

New legislation introduced last year has seen the establishment of Community Justice Partnerships in each local authority area in Scotland. Partners share a collective responsibility covering a wide-range of interests, including; housing, employability, health and wellbeing and places decision-making into the hands of local people and agencies who are at the centre of their Community.
