College social care course is “changing lives”
Date: 17 January 2023
A year on and the Orkney College UHI course for people interested in exploring a career in social care has become a popular choice for those looking to make a difference to the lives of others in the county.
‘Introduction to a Career in Social Care’ is a 6-week online course, aimed at people aged 16 and over who are interested in working in social care including senior phase pupils, people who are unemployed, under threat of unemployment or considering a change in career.
The part-time course is free and fully funded. Students work through materials at their own pace and no prior qualifications or experience are required.
Students will gain an SCQF Level 5 certificate, and the course offers direct links to possible employment opportunities within the social care sector.
Derek Aiken is Curriculum Leader, Health, Social Care & Education at Orkney College UHI. He said: “Career opportunities in social care are many and varied, with a variety of services meeting the needs of children, young people and adults of all ages who need support.
“This could include settings such as care homes, care at home, day services, independent living and housing support services.
"Roles could involve helping people to plan their support needs, stay safe and well, maintain and develop relationships, live independently and achieve what is important in their life.
“Enrolling in the Introduction to a Career in Social Care course could be just the first step in what could be a long and rewarding career – we are part of that first step for our students – a choice that is undoubtedly changing lives for the better for folk in our communities.”
Lynda Bradford is Head of Head of Health and Community Care at Orkney Health and Care. She said: “Care services across Scotland continue to face serious issues around recruitment. Every positive step that can be taken in encouraging more people into the care sector is welcomed – and this course certainly represents a significant positive step.
“Orkney College UHI has played an integral role in the upskilling of our local care workforce for a number of years now. I would encourage anyone considering a career in care to look into this course.”
The next intake for the course begins on Monday 20 February 2023. To find out more and apply head here: SCQF Level 5 Introduction to a Career in Social Care - Certificate (uhi.ac.uk)
