Changed opening hours at Stromness fitness suite
Date: 24 April 2019
Time: 09:34
Changes have been made to the fitness suite timetable at Stromness Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre, following consultation with local community organisations and businesses.
The changes will include lunchtime openings on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, an early opening on a Monday and late opening on a Wednesday.
The changes have been brought about following representation from Stromness Community Development Trust and the Stromness Community Business Forum, businesses who'll be based at the Orkney Research and Innovation Campus and Serco Northlink Ferries, all who wished to see the gym open at what they viewed as more suitable hours.
Garry Burton is Sports and Leisure Manager for Orkney Islands Council. He said: "The Stromness Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre is a facility much loved by the community and it is therefore right that that community should feed into the opening hours of the services available here. We've listened, we've acted and we're now looking forward to seeing more people using the service, more often with the change in hours."
Kris Bevan is Chairperson of the Stromness Community Development Trust. He said: “We have worked in partnership with the Stromness Pool, Stromness Community Business Forum, Orkney Research and Innovation Campus, Serco NorthLink Ferries and the Community Council to increase opportunities for those working in the town to use local leisure facilities, so we’re very pleased with this new timetable. The facility is open to the public during these times so it’s a great boost for the community as a whole. We will continue to liaise with the OIC leisure to see what other opportunities are available to expand local leisure provision.”
The new timetable is currently available on the swimming pool's Facebook page and will be available on the Council website shortly.
Use of the centre is included in the Council’s Active Life Scheme which offers unlimited access to 12 different sports and leisure venues across the county.
The joint initiative between Pickaquoy Centre Trust and Orkney Islands Council has one simple aim - to get more people, more active, more often.
