Centenary tribute to the Legion
Date: 18 June 2021
Time: 03:10
Wreaths were laid today at the war memorials in Kirkwall and Stromness to mark the founding a century ago of the Royal British Legion (Scotland).
Representatives of the organisation’s Kirkwall and Stromness branches took part in the ceremonies, with numbers kept low because of the pandemic.
The Legion in Scotland was formed on June 18 in 1921, after Field Marshal Earl Haig brought together several charities that had been established to assist those returning from the horrors of the First World War.
On the 100th anniversary, a single wreath was laid at 11:00 today at each of the war memorials.
Paying tribute on behalf of Orkney Islands Council, Convener Harvey Johnston said:
“Congratulations to the Royal British Legion (Scotland) for a full century of continuous and most valued work supporting current and former service personnel, and for ensuring that their actions and their sacrifices for all our sakes are never forgotten.
“The Council is most appreciative of the work of the local branches, and for their support in facilitating many ceremonies and acts of remembrance.”
