Cathedral to be lit poppy red

St Magnus Cathedral will be lit red at night over the weekend to help raise awareness of the annual Scottish Poppy Appeal.
The Cathedral will be among a host of Scotland's most famous landmarks taking part in the 'light up red' campaign.
Gordon Michie, Head of Fundraising at Poppyscotland, said: “It’s fantastic to see Scotland lighting up red once again for the Scottish Poppy Appeal, and we’ve been blown away by the country’s support.
“We hope that when people see a wonderful iconic building like St Magnus Cathedral glowing red over the Remembrance weekend they will think about the many ways they, too, can go the extra mile in their support for this year’s Poppy Appeal.
“Whether it’s putting a little bit more in the Poppy tin, or doing something completely different to raise money, every penny helps us to offer life-changing support.”
The Cathedral is managed by Orkney Islands Council on behalf of the people of Orkney.
Peter Diamond, the Council’s Head of Lifelong Learning and Inclusion, said: "The Cathedral was lit red for the first time last year and looked absolutely stunning.
"I am sure everyone will be looking forward to seeing it lit again this November. It promises to be a wonderful sight and a poignant reminder of the sacrifice of fallen service men and women in the year Orkney commemorated the centenary of the loss of HMS Vanguard in Scapa Flow."
Known as the 'Light in the North', the Cathedral will be lit red overnight on Saturday and Sunday, the 11th and 12th of November.
Other landmarks taking part include Ayr Racecourse, Edinburgh Airport, the Kelpies, Inverness Castle and Ness Bridge, The Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh Castle, Eilean Donan Castle, St Giles Cathedral, Scone Palace, Glasgow Cathedral and Brodick Castle.
